Choose the right template
There are a few things you need to know about choosing a resume template. First, the resume template you choose must be ATS-friendly. Otherwise, your resume will be rejected at initial screening steps. Next, your resume template should be appealing for both bots and humans. Don’t choose the most boring resume template you see because you are afraid of the ATS. Then, the resume template you select should be well-organized and visually appealing. Once you either download or create a resume template that is all the above, you can start adding your details into it.

Your name and contact details must go first
When mentioning your name on the resume, lead with your first and last names. Avoid mentioning your nicknames and aliases that your college friends gave you. Also, ensure that the name on your resume matches the name you have displayed on your social media and LinkedIn. You can add your credentials after your name to make a bigger impact on hiring managers. Then, you should mention your contact details. A professional email address, phone number, and location are sufficient.

Include the links
It is important to mention a link to your LinkedIn profile right after your other contact information. If you work in the creative industry, you can include links that lead hiring managers to your related social media accounts. However, you should have shared content relevant to your industry through those accounts for them to be mentioned on your resume. Then, you can add links to your digital portfolio, blog, or personal website to your resume. When you include multiple links, be sure to label them on your resume so potential employers are not confused.

Start listing skills
Then, you should create a dedicated skills section for your resume where you display 10-15 of your most relevant skills using bullet points. These skills should align with the job description of the job you are applying for and must follow the priority order set by the employer. Place your skills section toward the top one-third of your resume so that important keywords are visible at first glance.

Mention your education
A detailed education section is expected on a resume when you are a recent graduate, or you have less than two years of experience in the industry. In such cases, mention the title of your qualification, awarding institution, relevant dates, coursework, and academic achievements for each entry you make. Follow reverse chronological order and list the most relevant qualifications first. If you are an experienced professional, your resume can do without a detailed education section. You can simply list each educational qualification you have and mention the awarding body.

Talk about work experience
This is the most important section of your resume, so you need to pay double the attention when creating your career history. Follow reverse chronological order and make entries for each of your past jobs within the last 10-15 years. Describe each job with a short paragraph containing 1-2 lines. Then, elaborate the professional achievements in each role using bullet points. The more recent roles should contain 6 bullets while older and less relevant roles can be described with 3 bullets. Use active language to write bullet points.

Add more value with extra sections
Now that you have completed the most basic sections of your resume, you can start adding extra sections to add more value to your job application. The most common additional resume sections that you can include are interests, certifications and licenses, languages, volunteer work, publications, projects, patents, and awards.

Write a summary
The resume summary statement must go on at the top of your resume, before the skills section. However, it is a smart idea to create your resume summary last, once all the other sections are completed. This gives you the chance to spot the most important skills, professional achievements, and qualifications on your resume to be highlighted at the very beginning. Keep your summary statement between 2 and 4 lines for maximum impact.
